As a massage therapist one of the most common postural problems I see is Forward Head Posture (FHP). Nearly every client mentions some level of discomfort in their neck and shoulders! And with the increase in smart phones, I see it much more now than I did 8 years ago when I first started my massage practice.

Since we live in a front-facing world we are repeatedly looking forward and down while rolling our shoulders forward and slouching (texting, reading, typing, watching TV, driving, wearing a backpack…). Repetitive movements in any certain direction will strengthen the body’s nerve and muscle pathways to move in that direction (i.e. the more we pull forward, the easier it becomes for the body to naturally find and hold that posture).

The effects of poor posture on health and wellbeing are increasingly apparent. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, and lung capacity are among the functions more easily influenced by posture. Ideally, the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders. Think of the weight of the head like a bowling ball: holding it forward and out of alignment, puts a massive strain on your neck and upper back muscles! The result can be chronic muscle fatigue and an aching neck.

This may seem unavoidable, but there are some simple, quick, and easy solutions that all of us can do to counteract the effects of our forward facing world.

  • For office use and video game play, place your computer monitor height so the top third of the screen is even with your eyes and the screen is 18” – 24” from your face.
  • Every half hour, sit/stand up straight and pull the neck and head back over you shoulders. Hold for a count of 3, and breath deeply. Do for 15-20 breaths.
  • Use a back support pillow and engage your abdominal muscles when sitting or driving. By supporting the low back and engaging the abs, the head and neck will want to move back over the shoulders.
  • Receive regular massage & bodywork and stretch your body to help keep your muscles lose and supple.

If you are like me and enjoy creating your own body care products, using clean and simple ingredients, here is a simple and effective toothpaste. I’ve been trying this one out and really liking it!

Ingredients:

4 Tbs Coconut Oil
4 Tbs Bentonite Clay
2 – 3 Tbs filtered water
1/2 tsp Pink Salt
10 – 15 drops peppermint essential oil
(You can add a few drops of liquid stevia if you feel so inclined.)

Directions:

1. Mix coconut oil, clay, and salt in a small bowl. Start with just one tablespoon of water. Working with the back of a spoon, “cream” the ingredients together and add more water until you like the consistency. (If you choose to add in a few drops of liquid stevia, this is the step to do it).

2. Add in the peppermint oil (or cinnamon or spearmint) and then mix until well combined. Store in air tight container.

To use: Place a pea-size amount on your toothbrush and the brush. Not too hard. Not too long. Just enough to make your mouth happy. Rinse. (Although it’s safe to consume in case your kiddies don’t rinse very well.)

Let us know your feedback if you give the recipe a try!

I was first introduced to the lovely and decadent “world peace cookie” about a year ago…I remember it fondly. It was a chilly fall night and my new neighbor, Kelly invited me over for wine, sweets, and adult conversation after getting our kids to bed.

I know, how could I resist?

I made my way over to her house and I could smell the buttery goodness right when I walked in. In between some laughs and sips of wine, Kelly popped off the couch and disappeared for a few minutes. What she returned with stole my heart and my tastebuds instantly.

I’m laughing at myself now as I reflect on this moment because it’s well…kind of romantic.

The cookie is a French shortbread cookie that was was developed by Pierre Herme with the American chocolate chip cookie in mind using brown sugar. It’s Buttery. Chocolatey. Chewy and lovingly topped off with French Sea Salt .

Years later they were renamed World Peace Cookies. The story goes that  “If everyone had it, peace would reign o’er the planet”. Not a bad concept…and certainly worth a shot in my book!

When you taste these, you’ll understand why! They are so pleasing to the senses you’ll smile from he inside out and you’ll WANT to share them!

A secret that Kelly shared with me about this sweet treat is that making several batches and freezing them makes for easy, instant gratification!  This is a big yes for me as my days and nights have become increasingly busy. Traditionally, the cookie is rolled into a log, sliced into discs, then baked. I find that storing the sliced cookies in the freezer is easier than trying to cut into a frozen cookie dough log.

I’ve shared a copy of Dorie Greenspan’s recipe here. Dorie is responsible for first publishing Pierre Herme’s recipe in her cookbook Paris Sweets in 2002. She’s also behind the renaming of the cookie which was re-published in Baking From My Home to Yours.

Okay, so my most favorite part of this recipe is how easily it is to adapt to your mood. You want to add peanut butter chips, caramel, or nuts? Do it!

My favorite is to add lavender and top with Pink Himalayan salt. I mean, how gorgeous and yummy are these?!

I am deeply grateful to get to work with this amazing crew and for such a beautiful business. But lets be real, work is work, no matter how awesome the place. So this past Wednesday, after a rocking busy summer, we closed early and gathered as a staff just to have some fun together!

We started by sampling ice cream crafted specifically for us by the creative folks at The Hop Ice Cream Cafe: Lavender Ice Cream with a Salty Chocolate Swirl. Nom nom nom! Then we headed out to catch the LaZoom Comedy Tour bus. For an hour an a half we got to let loose, laugh, and be tourists in our own beautiful city.

What a sweet splendid evening we had, and a reminder of how important it is to break out of our routines, laugh, love, and connect with those around us.

The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordering Jordan and Israel

Its surface and shores are 1,388 ft below sea level, the earth’s lowest elevation on land. The Dead sea is 1,237 feet deep and it is the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. It is 34 miles long and 11 miles wide at its widest point, with 33.7% salinity it is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. It is a landlocked body of water that contains significant concentrations of sodium chloride and other mineral salts, with saline levels surpassing even that of ocean water!

Although the salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals can not flourish, hence its name The Dead Sea, it has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years and is know as one of the world’s first health resorts. The Dead Sea area has become a major center for health research and treatment for several reasons – the mineral content of the water, the very low content of pollens and other allergens in the atmosphere, the reduced ultraviolet component of solar radiation, and the higher atmospheric pressure at this great depth each have specific health effects. Many people use the salt and minerals from the Dead Sea to create cosmetics, herbal body care products and healing sachets.

Today people from all over the world come to explore its unique beauty and healing powers. The Dead Sea’s unusually high salt concentration means that people can easily float in the Dead Sea due to natural buoyancy.

When we let go of the struggle to stay afloat…we float!
