We’ve talked a few times on our blog about stone medicine. Gemstones can benefit your spiritual practice as there are healing properties associated them. Carnelian stone medicine is one of my personal favorites. Courage, self esteem, creativity, and rebirth are all associated with Carnelian. This is an all around powerful manifestation tool and one to hold near and dear to your heart.

Carnelian stone medicine helps to restore the balance between the divine masculine and the divine feminine.

In ancient times carnelian was considered blessed with feminine energy and fertility. The masculine side of the stone was more active in its power, embracing the fiery energy of the new. The stone was there to stimulate love and passion between the two divines.

As the stone passed into the middle ages, it became the sign of alchemy, healing, and power.

Its properties aid in protecting against sickness and longevity of life. The word Carnelian itself means “flesh,” which seems fitting as it is a daily reminder that we are flesh and blood, and should make the most of being present on this Earth.

As a potent healing crystal, Carnelian heals the body, mind, and soul in one sweep.

Much like the cleansing properties of Selenite, this stone is one to keep with you at all times. Nowadays, carnelian aligns with one’s sociability, creativity, individuality, courage, happiness, and self esteem.

Hopefully this stone helps assist you in your healing journey.

One of the most interesting things we have in our retail space are our cooking slabs (also known as a salt plate).

Over the holidays, we put out a recipe using the salt plate to roast some vegetables. Today, I am going to share one of my favorite uses for the salt plate, Chili Lime Tofu, a Caribbean inspired tofu dish using the salt plate to enhance all of the island-inspired flavors.

Don’t worry though, if you’re not able to get your hands on one of our cooking slabs, I have also included an alternative recipe. Either way, it’s delicious!

Ann’s Chili Lime Tofu

What You’ll Need:

1/3 cup olive oil

1 Tbs Tajine seasoning

1 Tbs fresh lime juice

Himalayan Salt

1 package Firm or Super Firm Tofu

2 Tbs chopped fresh chives

Directions:

  1. Start by pressing your tofu to get all of the moisture out. You can either do this overnight or for at least 3 hours. Getting the moisture out of the tofu helps to get is crisp and to keep its shape
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, Tajine seasoning, lime juice and 1/2 tsp. salt until combined. Add the tofu to the bowl and toss to coat evenly with the olive oil mixture. Refrigerate until ready to cook, at least an 1 hour.
  3. If using a salt plate, place it on the grill and preheat to medium-high heat. Slowly preheat the plate over a period of 45 minutes or until the grill temperature reaches 450 to 500 degrees
  4. If not using a salt plate, heat 1 tbs olive oil in skillet or heavy bottom pan over medium high heat on stove
  5. (if using salt plate) Lightly brush salt plate with olive oil
  6. Place the tofu on the salt plate or in your pan and cook, turning once, until each side of the tofu is a golden brown- about 2-3 minutes per side
  7. Transfer the tofu to a warm platter and garnish with fresh chives and extra lime juice
  8. Find your favorite dipping sauce (I enjoy a pineapple BBQ sauce with this dish) & enjoy!

Ever wonder why being outdoors in the sunshine, forest, mountain, park, waterfall, rainfall or at the beach makes you feel immediately re-centered?

It is the negative ions that we are exposed to in very high concentrations when we interact with this kind of environment. Essentially, negative ions create positive vibes!

The Salt Cave is another space in which there are high concentrations of negative ions.

When we inhale negative ions in the environment, the ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase serotonin levels in our brains, which can relieve stress, boost energy and alleviate depression. In other words, negative ions equal positive vibes.

These ions can make your body feel recharged and rejuvenated. According to Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain “negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.”

Unfortunately, many of our homes and offices are filled with just the opposite — positive ions.

Having high levels of positive ions in an environment can create anxiety, irritability, suppress the immune system, and foster low energy.

Positive ions are created from environmental pollution and electromagnetic devices, such as cell phones, computers, fluorescent light and your television set.

I am sure most of us would prefer to spend more time in nature and frolicking through the lush Appalachian mountains absorbing all the negative ions all the time. But its not always possible since we have homes and jobs to return to.

Good news! There are ways to generate negative ions in your home or office that will dispel/minimize positive ions. Remember, negative ions create positive vibes:

  • Salt lamps (they also offer 84 trace minerals essential to the human body and mind)
  • A shower or salt bath
  • House plants (spider plant, pathos, and snake plant are some notable purifiers)
  • Air purifiers
  • Opening windows (for fresh air) and allowing sunshine into your space
  • Turning off/unplugging electronics when not in use
An anchor is something that helps us feel grounded; something that holds us in place and offers support.

A spiritual anchor can be God/Source/The Universe, family, friends, a specific memory – anything that helps us feel stable and makes breathing a bit easier. By aligning with our spiritual anchors, whatever they may be, we are being directed towards light and calming our fears.

Feeling grounded within yourself is something we all tend to take for granted every once in awhile.

It’s easy to get lost and caught up in our day to day, our relationships, our environment, etc. Sometimes, when the weight of the world starts to feel a little to heavy, it’s nice to have something within ourselves that we can call upon to lead us back to our center. That’s when spiritual anchors can come in useful.

For me personally, when I need my anchor – a pocket of peace during a hectic day- I bring myself back to memories of living by the ocean.

I imagine feeling the bright sun on my skin, and I automatically feel a sense of warmth run through my body. It’s like receiving a hug from someone you haven’t been able to see in awhile. But then there are days when things can seem really rough between my emotions and how busy my day is, when I feel like I don’t even have a moment to think. Those are the days I like to recite a few prompts to myself that also serve as anchors for me.

I like to reflect on these prompts through out the day and, if I find time, journal about them before I go to bed at night.

If you ever need some guiding words, or something to help bring you back to your center…here are a few of my favorite sayings i like to carry with me:

  1. I am enough, worthy of friendship and love, just as I am
  2. My value is not diminished by my imperfections or the perceptions of others
  3. I am deserving of good things, happiness, and love
  4. I am here, and that matters
  5. I choose and am in control of positive thoughts
  6. I let my happiness be visible to others
  7. I will observe myself free of judgment
  8. I am in the process of making positive changes
  9. What is meant for me will be mine
  10. I give myself permission to be okay where I am. I know that I am doing my best.

Sometimes we are all we have during a crazy time in our day/life, so be kind to yourself and remember to always find your anchor to pull yourself back “home.”

Many people find the Salt Cave to be a great place for deep breathing, grounding, and connecting with one’s spiritual anchors. Learn more about the salt cave here.

Have you ever felt confused which massage to ask for, Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage?

Ok lets break it down. Every body is unique and different in what it likes, what it needs, and what it doesn’t. You deserve to have what you want and need when receiving a massage.

As massage therapists, we encourage you to share your specific needs with us during the intake process. Are you looking for more of a Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage? Please speak up at any point during the session if you need something adjusted. We are grateful when clients feel comfortable enough to tell us if there is anything we can do to improve.

Let’s start with a Swedish massage and what it entails.

It’s a common term you may see when looking into getting a massage. It is the foundation for most other massage modalities, but what does it really mean?

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered massage technique, utilizing a light to firm pressure on the muscles.

It uses a combination of techniques such as long flowing strokes, kneading movements, friction, vibration and percussion. This massage will often include passive and active joint movements (gentle stretching and bending of the joints).  It is customizable to each client’s specific needs and desired pressure. Swedish massage generally provides a more relaxing experience, but the pressure may not be enough for some people.

In contrast, deep tissue massage applies much more pressure to certain areas to release tension deep within the muscles and fascia.

Deep tissue massage is a specific type of massage that targets deeper structures of muscles and fascia.

It is best used on smaller muscle injuries and chronic problems. Most often the massage therapist will work layer by layer, starting out with some Swedish massage to warm up the muscle groups, in order to get in deeper on specific areas that need releasing. This creates changes in posture and makes room for movements after releasing fascial adhesions and chronic muscle contractures. Deep tissue massage may focus on stretching fascia, releasing trigger points, and softening deep muscular adhesions.

The pressure given should not be painful, but border the line of pleasurable release of tension and the pain blocking response.

If you are cringing, or otherwise tensing up during your session, your massage therapist will likely back off the pressure a bit. We are looking for that sweet spot, often explained as “it hurts so good”. Breathing slowly and deeply during your session will help your body to receive the deeper massage work. We also welcome you to speak up if the pressure is too much, not enough, or needs to be adjusted in any way.

It is important to understand these two different types of offerings, to help your massage therapist understand what your needs and expectations are for your massage that day.

Often people will be more prone to prefer one type of massage pretty consistently, but your needs can change from session to session.

Swedish massage is more about deep relaxation, increasing circulation of blood and lymph, and relieving discomfort. Deep tissue massage is usually more focused on specific areas/needs that the client wants to address. Such things as chronic headaches, pain, injuries, and postural issues.

More often than not, an Integrative massage is what a client ends up needing/wanting. These sessions integrate various modalities to offer the relaxing effects from a Swedish massage as well as the focused deeper work from deep tissue massage.

Every massage is different, just as every body is different. Remember to speak up so your massage therapist can give you the massage your body needs!

Rose Quartz has long been associated with unconditional love, compassion, and self-acceptance. It is a stone of the heart, which provides emotional support and inner healing.

This is a small stone approximately 1 inch. These beautiful stones varies in size, shape and color.

This stone can help reduce anxiety and inspire you to open and express your true heart.

Learn more about Rose Quartz here

Since we are now in the month of unconditional love, as Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, I wanted to focus on the healing powers of Rose Quartz. Not only is it the stone of love, as it activates our heart chakra…but it is also a huge source of deep inner healing, peace, and friendship.

We often assume love only shows up in our lives when we are giving it to others, but self love is just as important as loving someone close to you.

I use Rose Quartz during my meditations to restore the harmony, trust, and unconditional love within myself. As someone who has taken advantage of streaming all of Ru Paul’s Drag Race during quarantine, I’d like to offer a quote from Ru himself: “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love somebody else?” Before I start giving my love to my friends and family, I like to let myself revel in it. It reminds me to be kind to myself, honor my truth, and always focus on living in a peaceful state.

Once I am able to ground myself and feel the positive energy running through my body, almost ready to burst…that’s when the love I give to others really starts to excel.

The Rose Quartz stone helps to purify the heart at all levels; any time I feel down or need a little pick me up, I like to hold on to the stone tightly while closing my eyes and taking a few deep breaths. Rose Quartz aids in ridding of any negative energy and protects against all types of pollution: whether that is environmental or negativity that lives in our heads. It replaces all the bad with pure intent and love.

Though Valentine’s Day is mostly about showing your love to someone else, don’t hesitate to show it to yourself. To be able to love someone entirely, you have to be able to love and accept yourself just as much.

Rose Quartz balances the divine feminine with the masculine, giving overall strength to the heart, body, and mind.

So while we may be stuck at home this Valentines with a lot of the outside world being shut down, find yourself a piece of Rose Quartz (we sell them at the shop), draw a warm bath, & indulge in yourself, the love you have for those you’re closest too, and allow yourself to feel the energy and power of this sweet, powerful stone.

These chocolate chip cookies, with browned butter and pecans, are sure to keep you warm and cozy during this winter season.

This recipe for chocolate chip cookies is delicate, rich in flavor, and packs a mean punch with browned vegan butter. Each chocolate chip cookie is baked with toasted pecans, dark chocolate, and topped off with a dash of Himalayan salt. These cookies are a crowd pleaser for everyone, with a crispy outside and a chewy middle. It will be hard to keep them on the table for longer than a day, so allow yourself to indulge and give into a super sweet and savory temptation.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 1 cup unsalted vegan butter
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp Himalayan pink salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 2 large eggs // OR: 2 tbsp ground flax seed & 6 tbsp water (mixed together, set aside, & let thicken for 5 minutes)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate + more for topping
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped + more for topping
  • Flaky salt

INSTRUCTIONS

First
  1. Brown the butter: Add the 1 cup of butter to a saucepan over medium heat and melt. Continue to stir until it turns a rich amber color and gives off a nutty scent.
  2. Pour into a large mixing bowl (making sure to scrape in the browned bits at the bottom of the pot) and set aside to cool.
  3. In a smaller bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
  4. Once the brown butter is no longer hot, add the brown sugar, sugar, and molasses to the bowl. Whisk to combine. It should resemble the texture of a slushie.
  5. Whisk in the eggs (or flax egg mixture) and vanilla until fully combined.
  6. Pour in all of the dry ingredients and mix to incorporate. Switch to a rubber spatula to fold in the ingredients once the dough starts to thicken.
  7. Fold in the dark chocolate and pecans. At this point, the dough should be sticky and able to hold its shape when scooped. If it’s too thin, place it in the refrigerator uncovered for about 30 minutes to cool.
Next
  1. When its at the right consistency, scoop out the cookie dough using a large 2oz scoop or 1/4 measuring cup. Place the scoops side by side on a plate or small baking sheet lined with wax or parchment paper.
  2. Place extra chocolate chips and pecans on top of each cookie and chill for at least 30 minutes, but they can also be left overnight.
  3. When ready, place 5-6 large cookies on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 350F for 13-15 minutes. If your cookies are smaller than 2oz, bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies are ready when the edges are golden and the middle looks puffed, pale, and a bit underdone.
  4. When they’re hot from the oven, sprinkle the tops with a bit of sea salt and transfer to a cooling rack.
Dig in and enjoy!

Lauren has been practicing bodywork since 2006. She is intuitive, caring, and dedicated in her work. With experience in several modalities, she infuses her sessions with techniques from Swedish, Deep Tissue, Hot Stone, Acupressure, & Energy Work to give a well rounded and deeply relaxing treatment.

Co-creating with the universe can be done in various ways: vision boards for manifestation, meditation, journaling, or ceremony. No matter how you choose to manifest your truth, one thing will always remain the same: the Universe hears you, and always works WITH you to bring you your highest good.

The hardest part about doing manifestation work is trusting the process:

giving into any doubt or fear you have while creating your “dream life.” As someone who is extremely impatient in all areas of my life, having to play the waiting game while the Universe works its magic (you can’t rush greatness) isn’t the easiest thing for me. What does help get my magic flowing and help speed up the manifestation process for me is being able to see what it is I am creating. This is why I love vision boards for manifestation.

Being able to physically see what it is I am working towards helps make the vision clear for me.

Not only have I found this practice to be quick and clear, it’s also a lot of fun.

We currently live in a crazy time with our lives constantly shifting and changing. Getting a clear vision of what it is you’re working towards, regardless of what obstacles are thrown in your way, helps align your spirit and your mind, relaxes your body, and helps bridge the gap between the 3D and 5D.

So how do you create vision boards for manifestation?

I’m going to teach you. The best thing to remember is that there are no limitations. This is your life – you can create anything you want and have your life be as big and as beautiful as you dream it to be.

STEP ONE: Define your goals

List the areas in your life that are important to you. For me, these things consist of my health, my home life, my job, etc. See how many things you can come up with, but don’t spend too much time on this part. 5 or 10 minutes is all you need. Jot down whatever comes to mind first.

STEP TWO: Find your inspiration

Start looking for images or words that align with the goals you wrote down from step one. For example, when I am working on the part of my vision board that focuses around health, I tend to gravitate towards fitness and lifestyle magazines. This is just an example, though- use your imagination and get creative. Anything from stickers to wrapping paper to leaves & flowers can be a part of the imagery you use.

Make yourself cozy and grab your favorite tea or coffee- this is the part that takes the most time. By the “end” (there never really is an end, as our lives keep expanding), you should have a large pile of words and images

STEP THREE: Map out your vision board

Depending on how big you choose to make your board, this is what you’ll need:

  • poster board
  • scissors
  • glue / tape
  • sharpies / markers
  • anything fun you want to add: washi tape, ribbon, stickers, etc

I like to write out each topic on my board and space them out far enough that I can start putting images associated with my word directly underneath…however, this is your board, and you can make it as free or compact as you’d like.

Start laying out your images on your board, but don’t start gluing right away. Once you have your words and images where you want them, then start to glue them down. I like to leave the edges of my images open in case I want to layer things.

STEP FOUR: Bring it to life

When you are finished creating your board, it’s important to find a special place for it: somewhere you can see it and reference it any time you need to come back to yourself and remind your inner being of what it is you are working towards/creating. Another tip is to take a picture of it and make it your phone wallpaper so that it is always with you.

AND FINALLY…

Manifesting is not about creating a new life or a new you. It is about realigning yourself with your truth and your vision. What you are wanting to bring into your life, you already are.

When you are able to visualize your dreams, goals, and desires, and live your life as if they are already your reality, the possibilities your life holds for you are endless. Vision boards are a fun tool for manifestation!

2020 has been challenging, as we all know. In writing this, I do not wish to minimize any of these hardships, but to redirect some focus on what we do have, focusing on an attitude of gratitude.

If you begin to take count of the abundance in your life, you may gain a renewed perspective with an attitude of gratitude.

If you are finding it a challenge to see abundance in your life, take a moment to consider: Have you eaten today? When you ate did you digest without any discomforts? Are you able to easily move your body? Did you sleep under a roof last night?

For some these are simple day to day tasks, for others they may not be so easy.

It is not always simple to comprehend our prosperity until we consider our reality without it.

I encourage you to take some time to write out/or contemplate what you’re grateful for in your life at the moment, include even the small details. In doing this, and potentially starting a daily practice of awareness and gratitude, your perspective will shift over time. Rather than focusing your energy on what’s not going right, you’ll soon find yourself focused on what IS going right.

An attitude of gratitude is a lifestyle that will heal many of the nuanced anxieties that plague our minds. In addition, this lifestyle is contagious; others will gravitate towards your positive demeanor. And you may find yourself asking others what they are grateful for, and spreading the gratitude attitude.

For more ways to focus on the positive, shift your perspective, and bring abundance into your life, you may enjoy our blog Vision Boards for Manifestation here.

I’m not sure if it’s something that is common world-wide, or just something I picked up when I lived in New York, but one of my favorite meals to have on Christmas Eve/Day is lasagna.

I had never heard of a Christmas Lasagna until I was living in Brooklyn and spent the holidays with some friends and their family…but ever since that year, I look forward to having lasagna at Christmas every year!

This year, I decided to do something a little different. Our holiday menu is already planned, and unfortunately lasagna did not make the cut. However, my brother did ask me to make an appetizer for Christmas Eve. I automatically gravitated towards soup and salad. And then I had the miraculous idea of turning my lasagna into soup and getting to keep my tradition going…but just doing it a little differently.

Making this soup was a lot of fun. I got to play with my tradition, as well as incorporate using one of our Swizzle Sticks to give this soup a lot of flavor.

Our Swizzle Stick is made from pure Himalayan Sea Salt, giving any drink or meal just the right amount of flavor needed with each stir. It’s a conversation starter, for sure, and definitely adds something unique to your kitchen. They make great stocking stuffers as they are the perfect size (and price) and adds something really unexpected to your gift giving this year. They also make great gifts for yourself…who doesn’t want to treat themselves a little every now and then!?

What You Need

·       2 tsp olive oil

·        8 lasagna noodles

·       1 medium white onion, chopped

·       3 garlic gloves, chopped

·       1 tbsp tomato paste

·       1 can diced tomatoes

·       1/3 uncooked red lentils

·       2 tbsp nutritional yeast

·       4 cups vegetable broth

·       3 stirs of salt swizzle stick

·       1/2 tsp pepper

·       1 1/2 tbsp Italian seasoning

·       1/2 cup dairy free, unflavored milk

·       1/2 small lemon seeded & juiced

·       1 cup fresh spinach

·       Garnish- fresh basil, fresh parsley & vegan parmesan

Directions

Heat a large pot with oil on medium heat. Once hot, add the chopped onion & cook for 3 minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Add the vegetable broth, lentils, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Stir three times with Salt Swizzle Stick and bring soup to a boil. (If soup needs more stirring, use a regular spoon – or if you feel it needs more salt, keep using the Swizzle Stick!)

Once the soup is boiling, break the lasagna noodles into bite sized pieces & add to the soup. Cook for 7-8 minutes or until the noodles are completely cooked.

Add the lemon juice, plant milk, nutritional yeast, spinach, & stir.

Remove the pot from the heat. Taste soup and add additional seasoning (salt, pepper, or Italian seasoning) if needed.

As someone who grew up in a very loud Greek family, silence wasn’t something I got to experience often. Our “quiet voices” could be heard from a mile away, which may explain where my anxiety stemmed from.

As an adult, and after moving off on my own, I have discovered the art of meditation and silence. It wasn’t an easy journey, and learning to let go of all the preconceived ideas I had around practicing meditation was definitely the hardest part.

I have been working within the mindfulness community for a few years now, and have people constantly reach out to me asking to help them learn how to meditate. So today, I thought I would share my secret to sitting in silence to reach enlightenment.

First thing’s first, release any idea you have about how to practice meditation.

There is no “right” or “perfect” way to do this. The idea that your mind must be free and clear from all thoughts is silly. Meditation’s goal is to help allow yourself the time and space to sit and just BE – no matter how cluttered your mind may feel. Let whatever thoughts you have come and go as they please. We are humans, so of course our minds are going to race; don’t let this be the reason you don’t allow yourself 5 to 10 minutes to go inward and reflect.

The other thing to keep in mind, is that there is no “right” way to meditate.

There is no set amount of time you have to sit with yourself in order to feel like your time is validated. Weather you choose to sit in silence, sit with music, or listen/watch a guided meditation, as long as your intention is pure and precise, you have mastered the art of silence & meditation perfectly.

Also leave behind the idea that silence means no noise from the world around you.

In my opinion, silence within meditation comes in many forms: quiet, soft music, background noise, passing traffic, etc. As long as that noise isn’t distracting you from being able to take a look within yourself for a few minutes a day and really focus on your inner being, you are an expert at meditation.

December is a crazy and hectic time for most of us; so this month, I invite you to mediate at least once a week, in whatever way you see fit, and allow yourself whatever amount of time you need to just be and breathe.

Give yourself the gift of inner peace this season. We all have to start somewhere when it comes to self care and self reflection, don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Close your eyes, sit, and breathe.

At the end of a long day, I love a relaxing soak, especially during a cold winter in the mountains.

There are many things that a hot bath can remedy such as stress and sore muscles. By adding Asheville Salt Cave’s Sweet Sole Bath Fizzy to your tub, you can enjoy a soothing and therapeutic experience that will make bathtime hard to end.

Asheville Salt Cave’s Sweet Sole Bath Fizzy is just one of my many favorite products in the shop. Made with himalayan salt, coconut oil, baking soda, cedarwood and sweet orange essential oils, calendula, crystal-infused witch hazel, and rose petals so you will feel ultra luxurious.

Each ingredient offers healing benefits:

Himalayan Salt: Promotes skin hydration and helps relieve muscle aches due to presence of trace minerals.
Coconut Oil: Leaves your skin feeling soft and nourished. Deeply moisturizing.
Baking Soda: Amazing for cleansing and detoxifying.
Cedarwood Oil: Aromatherapy used for sleep and has a soothing effect on mood
Sweet Orange Oil: Promotes a feeling of happiness and warmth. Natural antidepressant.
Calendula: Treatment for dry skin or healing skin wound.
Witch Hazel: Relieve irritation and muscle aches.
Rose Petals: Helps retain skin moisture and enhances mood. Helps rid anxiety.

Start by filling your tub with warm water, drop your fizzy into the tub, and get comfy and relax. I also love adding two cups of epsom salt to my bath for achy feet and muscles.

We all could use some additional love and self care this year.

Give the gift of self care to a loved one or give it to yourself. Purchase here or in our store at 16 N. Liberty St. in Asheville.
